According to the report, the highest-ranked area school was Tampa’s Plant High, which finished 36th in the state and 582nd in the nation out of the 17,000 schools ranked nationwide.

 

Other Hillsborough County schools that ranked in Florida’s top 100 were Steinbrenner (43), Newsome (46), Sickles (53), Brooks Debartolo Collegiate (59), Robinson (68) and Tampa Bay Tech (95).

 

Of the schools, the report found …

 

Plant High School ranked 36th within Florida and 582nd in the National Rankings. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Plant High School is 84%. The total minority enrollment is 33%, and 20% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

Steinbrenner High School ranked 43rd within Florida. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Steinbrenner High School is 78%. The total minority enrollment is 37%, and 21% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

Newsome High School ranked 46th within Florida. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Newsome High School is 77%. The total minority enrollment is 29%, and 16% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

Sickles High School ranked 53rd within Florida. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Sickles High School is 65%. The total minority enrollment is 55%, and 37% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

Brooks Debartolo Collegiate High School ranked 59th within Florida. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Brooks Debartolo Collegiate High School is 69%. The total minority enrollment is 55%, and 21% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

Robinson High School ranked 68th within Florida. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Robinson High School is 71%. The total minority enrollment is 53%, and 44% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

Tampa Bay Tech High School ranked 95th within Florida. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Tampa Bay Tech High School is 67%. The total minority enrollment is 87%, and 75% of students are economically disadvantaged.

 

U.S. News also ranks states based on the percentage of their high schools that finished in the top 25 percent nationally – with Florida ranking 6th with nearly 37 percent of its high schools in that category, behind Massachusetts, Maryland, California, Connecticut and New Jersey.

 

The school rankings are based on several factors, including college readiness as measured on Advanced Placement and IB exams, the breadth of a school’s college curriculum as measured by the percentage 12th graders who took and passed AP and IB exams, scores on math and reading tests, the graduation rate, and an analysis of how minority students are faring in the schools.
